The Hain Celestrial Group, Inc., and Sara Snow Make Going Green Easy
1. Don’t stop at recycling. Close the circle by buying recycled-content products such as toilet tissue made from recycled paper and cutting boards made from recycled plastics.
2. Take shorter showers. Showers use up to five gallons of water per minute. Cut your shower from ten minutes to five and you could save almost ten thousand gallons of water per year.
3. Turn your kitchen into a beauty bar. Foods like olive oil, yogurt, honey and tea can work wonders on tired skin and hair. Bring out the highlights in your hair naturally by bathing it in cooled chamomile tea (try Celestial Seasonings® chamomile tea bags). You can also make your own foot scrub using two parts Hain Pure Foods® Sea Salt and one part Spectrum® Organic olive oil. Treat your face to a moisturizing mask using equal parts yogurt and honey. Your body will thank you.
4. Wrap yourself in eco-fibers. Cloth made from silky organic cotton or sustainable bamboo plants provides comfy and healthy clothes, bedding and towels. They feel great and they’re good for the planet.
5. De-clutter your nursery. If you’re a new parent, resist the temptation to over-buy for your little one. Simplify and cut down on excess for a clutter-free and environmentally sound nursery.
6. Save energy on lighting. Place energy-efficient Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) in your most-used fixtures. CFLs are perfect for those hard-to-reach ceiling lamps and outdoor fixtures because they last about ten times longer than standard incandescent bulbs.
7. Make secondhand your first choice. The next time you need to replace a large item such as a car, couch or bedroom set, consider buying secondhand. Choosing “previously owned” items is sometimes the most eco-friendly way to go.
8. Go from kitchen to compost. Don’t just throw away kitchen scraps; compost them instead. You’ll get a nutrient-dense soil that will fertilize your garden for free. All you need is a composting bin and some sun.
9. Green your machine. Not everyone can drive a hybrid, but a simple tune-up can help you get the best possible mileage out of any car. Also, make sure your vehicle has a clean air filter, properly inflated tires and as little extra weight as possible, for the most energy-efficient ride.
10. Freshen the air – naturally. The air inside our homes is often more polluted than the air outside. A few well-chosen plants offer an easy solution. Plants like Gerbera Daisy, English Ivy and Bamboo Palm are especially effective at cleaning household air.
